CSX’s Ward presented with Salzberg Medallion

CSX Chairman, President, and CEO Michael J. Ward was presented the Salzberg Medallion on Oct. 6 by the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.

The Salzberg Medallion is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of transportation and supply chain management, “in part because of the caliber of past honorees and in part because of the program’s rigorous selection process,” according to the Whitman School of Management. “Each year, former Salzberg Medallion recipients and other distinguished practitioners active in the transportation and supply chain management fields are invited to nominate individuals and companies for consideration for the award. A screening committee of Syracuse University faculty and active professionals deliberates and selects the honorees.”

The management school’s Harry E. Salzberg Lecture Program was established in 1949 through a grant to Syracuse University by Harry Salzberg’s son, Murray M. Salzberg (Class of 1937), in memory of his father’s distinguished career in transportation. Salzberg medallions are awarded annually “to outstanding practitioners, advocates, academicians or researchers in the field of transportation, distribution and logistics management, and to companies for pioneering ideas and policies that have reshaped the industry.”

Prior to receiving the award, Ward participated in a panel discussion on the future of the railroad industry. Moderated by Railway Age Editor William C. Vantuono, the panel also included Pinsley Railroad Company President John Levine, Parsons Brinckerhoff Manager of Operations Planning and Special Projects Peter Sklannik Jr., and Accenture Partner Brooks Bentz.

Among previous Salzberg Medallion recipients from the railroad industry are L. Stanley Crane, Ray Burton, Jim Hagen, Hays Watkins, Stuart Saunders, and Bill Johnson.
