GO Transit eyes Kitchener layover site
Written by Douglas John BowenOntario's provincial government seeks to construct a multimodal storage facility for GO Transit buses and trains, in Kitchener, Ontario, with Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area transit agency Metrolinx soliciting design and engineering companies.
Local media report companies interested in the project toured the prospective site last week. Cost of construction has not yet been made available.
Some GO Transit trains at present lay over at an existing site just north of downtown Kitchener. But GO Transit expects to increase both rail and bus service between Kitchener and Toronto in the future, plans for which include electrification of numerous GO Transit rail lines.
The 64-mile Kitchener Line, formerly the Georgetown Line, was renamed in 2011 after being extended to its namesake city, linking Kitchener and Toronto Union Station and serving 11 intermediate stations.
